About

On 8 October 2016, an airstrike allegedly by the Saudi-led military coalition struck the village of Deir Al-Ḩajārī in northwest Yemen. The airstrike killed a family of six, including the pregnant mother and four children. At the site of the airstrike bomb remnants were found, and a suspension lug manufactured by RWM Italia S.p.A., a subsidiary of the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall AG. In April 2018, ECCHR and its partners from Italy and Yemen called for an investigation into the criminal liability of the Italian authorities and RWM’s directors for arms exports. The preliminary investigations judge confirmed in February 2021 that the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office must continue the case.

Further research and investigation to this case by the judge in Rome revealed: The prosecutor confirmed that the RWM Italia suspension lug found at the scene of the attack may have been exported in November 2015, at which point UN bodies, international NGOs and Yemeni organizations had documented repeated Saudi/UAE-led coalition violations. There is ample evidence of the use of European arms – including the MK 80 series bombs produced by RWM Italia, and the Eurofighter Typhoon and Tornado jets partially manufactured by Leonardo SpA – in alleged war crimes committed by the Saudi/UAE-led military coalition in Yemen.

RWM Italia is a subsidiary of the german automotive and defence company Rheinmetall.

According to research by SIPRI in 2018 Rheinmetall ranks 22th in global arms sales. Making it one of the largest arms producing companies in the world and especially in Europe.

Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) is a joint venture between the UK’s BAE Systems and Germany's Rheinmetall AG for military vehicle design, manufacture and support. This joint-venture is one of many interconnected partnerships in which defence companies partner up as seen in other cases before. Similar to the one like MBDA in which again BAE System, Airbus and Leonardo are owners.
